Land Use Change

Land Use is defined as the use of land by human activities, not necessarily always for financial profit or gain. A basic distinction may be drawn between rural and urban land use; Rural land use include agriculture, forestry, recreation, etc. Urban land use include industry, commerce, housing, transportation, government, etc.
Land Use Change is defined as the change of land use from one type to the others. The main reasons of the land use change are the demographic and economic development resulted from spatial interaction.
Land use in Michigan has experienced a dramatic change historically: from the native Indian's hunter and gatherers to early Europeans' raw material extraction (such as logging and mining); with the available of land and raw materials and capital, the third stage was agriculture and manufacture. Result of this process: accumulation of capital profit and agriculture expansion and environmental degradation.
Now the land use change in Michigan are experiencing a different turn: Urban and suburbanization. More and more agriculture land are being converted to suburban housing and other recreational uses such as golf court and parks due to market competition.
