Cartography is the production of maps which includes design, drafting and reproduction. Maps are a conventional representation of spatial phenomena on a plane surface. Unlike photographs, maps are selective and may be prepared to show various quantitative and qualitative facts, including boundaries, physical features, patterns and distributions. Maps may represent comparitive data such as industrial power, population density or birth and death rates. Each point on a map corresponds to a geographic position in accordance with a definite scale and projection.
