Until about 10,000 years ago much of the northeastern United States, including Michigan, was covered by glaciers.  This is what glaciers look like from above.  For thousands of years, Michigan was covered with ice MILES deep!  

The glacial ice advanced and retreated over Michigan four times, acting like giant bulldozers. When the glaciers retreated, they left the Great Lakes in the lowest spots, and higher areas remained toward the middle of Michigan.
