Once this discovery was made public, lumbermen started moving to Michigan. As you can see on the animation to the left, they mostly came from New England (Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachussetts, Maine, Rhode Island and Connecticut), New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. These states are located in the white pine belt.
