RYE
Rye is sparsely grown in Michigan, often in the north. It is planted in fall and
harvested in the following summer, much like winter wheat.
Many potato farmers plant rye after the potato harvest
and allow plow it under as a green manure crop. The decaying rye plants add
nutrients, organic matter, and keep the soil "loose" and with good structure.
