BARLEY Michigan barley growers planted 30,000 acres in 1993 and harvested 28,000 acres, the same as 1992. Total production dropped 13% from the pervious year, to 1.51 million bushels. The average yield was down to 54 bushels per acre from 62 bushels per acre in 1992. Other, more minor, grains grown in Michigan include barley. Whereas we often think of barley as being used primarily in the fermentation of beer, it is also a high value grain for cattle and poultry. As can be seen in the map below, barley is not a major crop in Michigan, but is more common in the western states.
